The Docks Went In Today!

By Jay - Posted on 11 April 2009

We put the docks in at the club today. It was cool and misty so we retired occasionally into the club house for warm-up breaks. A couple of times the conversations turned to the Laser fleet and how fast we were growing. As I listened to snatches of conversation I didn’t hear any other fleet being mentioned as often.

Club members are interested in trying a Laser. This is a big change from a few years ago when I got a lot of good natured kidding about how hard and wet it was to sail a Laser. Sailors who used to claim fun sailing was being able to sail around with your feet up are actually talking about how it might be fun to participate in a more active racing fleet.
Even the wet side of the Laser doesn’t seem to be the major deterrent it was; although the current cold water leaves everyone a bit cool on the idea of getting wet this early in the season. People don’t think I’m crazy when I offer to teach them how to recover from a dump and in fact there was even a little talk about technique today.
A few years back I was reading an article in Sailing World about what it took to build a fleet was someone promoting it. It apparently is working.
Money to retrofit the club boats so that they’re a pleasure to sail and represent Laser sailing at it s most enjoyable is still a big problem. The boat is affordable, but when you’re working with an inadequate budget, a new vang and stainless deck plate along with a base and cleats is a major deterrent.
Each day that I have time to sail the weather is cold and not at all inviting. And you know what happened Friday on the first 60 degree day – I was booked solid.
