QYC May Madness Regatta
Yesterday’s May Madness Regatta at QYC was a great start to the Massachusetts’s 2009 Laser regatta season, great for me and a great overall regatta – 20 Lasers, a full range of wind conditions, an efficient well-run race committee, close competition, warm air and friendly people. I find it pretty hard to beat that.
Most of us were stretching muscles and re-booting our software. What a gift to have the wind light as the day started and then have it increase as the boat handling skills re-formed. In the afternoon there were a few nice gusts, yet very few dumps.
The majority of racers were Masters with a third in the Grand Master category, but to balance us out there were two under 18 years old and three college sailors. A Master finished first overall and an under 18 finished fifth. It could have been a great ad for Laser sailing.
We had people from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Laser District-7 is clearly alive and well. Regattas are coming up in NH, RI, MA and VT latter in the season.
My goals this year are to be in the first row at the start, to catch more wind shifts and to avoid losing motivation as my body gets tired. We did eight races and I was clearly in the second row for only two races – not bad. I played the wind shifts to a second in one race and didn’t feel out of sync (a mild form of feeling in sync) too often. And I still had some motivation reserve in the tank at 3:00 when we quit.
Pictures will shortly be posted at http://ddmm.smugmug.com then click “sailing” and “May Madness 2009”. The password is “MayMad”.
For those of you who have been following my blogs about re-rigging the club’s Laser, I have sad news to report; in mild conditions it lost its mast step and tore the deck. The new Laser approved deck plate disintegrated as the mast went down, with both stainless loops breaking completely free with the loss of the plate and the blocks. Not much good engineering in that $36 dollar sucker.
IF you’re not sailing, I encourage you it’s time to get on the water.
